A new platform for knowledge dissemination

We envision Global Rheumatology by PANLAR as a transversal space—free of hierarchies, barriers, and opacity—yet grounded in ethical and quality standards, serving as a platform for Latin American scientific research and knowledge (and, in the future, from all of the Americas) to grow and reach the world.

It is with deep emotion, great joy, and proud satisfaction that I write this editorial for the launch of this scientific knowledge dissemination platform in rheumatology by PANLAR: Global Rheumatology by PANLAR.

As Editor-in-Chief Prof. Carlo Vinicio Caballero states in his editorial (1), PANLAR has a long and prolific history of scientific communication tools. This new initiative is far from being a culmination of previous efforts—we believe it marks the beginning of a new way of sharing scientific knowledge and production.

For many years, we discussed—within PANLAR’s executive committee, board of directors, study groups, scientific committees, education committee, and more—the need and relevance of PANLAR having its own journal. PANLAR’s partnership with the Journal of Clinical Rheumatology (JCR) is well known; it is, and will continue to be, PANLAR’s official journal. At this point, I would like to express special thanks to Ralph Schumacher, JCR’s long-time Director, and to Graciela S. Alarcón, the current Editor, for their unwavering support of PANLAR and research in Latin America.

Why launch a new journal in the field, knowing we already have the JCR and an overwhelming number of available journals? This discussion might have continued for years, had it not been for the inspiration of Dr. Caballero—a passionate advocate for digital communication and alternative forms of scientific dissemination—who helped us understand what we really needed to do.

This is not just a new scientific journal—it is a platform for knowledge dissemination. The dictionary defines “platform” as: “a flat, elevated, open horizontal surface that serves as a support or base for something.” We envision Global Rheumatology by PANLAR as a horizontal space (without hierarchies), flat (without barriers), open (transparent), yet elevated (held to high ethical and quality standards)—a place that supports Latin American scientific research and knowledge (and eventually that of all the Americas) so it can grow and be launched into the world.

This is why Global Rheumatology will not only feature a classic journal section with traditional peer-reviewed scientific research articles held to the highest standards of medical publishing, but also a high-level scientific journalism section in its magazine area. This will aid in the crucial task of scientific outreach through special sections that highlight and give visibility to science produced in our region, using diverse narrative and multimedia formats.

Together with its continuous publication model, innovative responsive design, publication in PANLAR’s three languages (Spanish, English, and Portuguese), and open access format, we are confident that many of you will immediately embrace this idea with enthusiasm, some will await results with hopeful optimism, and others will view it with cautious skepticism. We trust that eventually, everyone will support it.

In recent years, PANLAR has strongly promoted its slogan: “PANLAR SOMOS TODOS” (We are all PANLAR). Today, we want to say: GLOBAL RHEUMATOLOGY BY PANLAR belongs to everyone—and is for everyone. I invite you all to explore it, enjoy it, and live it!
